Book Launch: The Female Ruse, Women’s Deception and Divine Sanction in the Hebrew BibleA  Conversation with the author Rachel Adelman, facilitated by Gila Fine and Rabbi Joel Levy.

From Eve to Esther, the Hebrew Bible is replete with gendered tales of trickery. A lie is uttered, a mask donned, a seduction staged, while redemption is propelled forward, guided by the divine hand.  Rachel Adelman (PhD), author of the Female Ruse, draws on classic rabbinic sources and modern literary interpretation, to demonstrate that women are at the crux of the conflict over family alliances and lineage.  Women such as Rebekah and Bathsheba are compelled to use the indirect route in determining the heir to the covenant or the kingship while God advances the providential plan.

In conversation with Gila Fine (editor in chief of Maggid Books) and Rabbi Joel Levy (Director of the Conservative Yeshiva), the author will discuss the role of some of these biblical women and their ruses, based on selected readings from the book.
